Description

Piccolo Park is located in a busy little neighborhood close to Portland Favorite: Clinton Street Theater. This playground is small but ample.

Features

Piccolo Park has two slides, two swings, a water fountain, an accessibility ramp, a bridge, a fire pole, plenty of green space, artwork, shade, trash receptacles, and paved pathways.

Location

Piccolo Park is located on a quiet street not far from all the action. The neighborhood is near plenty of bars restaurants and of course the famous Clinton Street theater. This park brings a well-rounded nature in a neighborhood otherwise older child to adult-centric.

Breakdown

For this volume of Playground Reviews, we decided to visit at night to demonstrate how necessary lighting is for a park. The lack of lighting in a park can see a park go from a wonderful place to relax and play during the day to an eerie and perhaps unsafe place to be at night. Piccolo Park has one light so it earned half a point in this category as one light is not sufficient for this space.  We awarded only half of a point for swings on the account of a lack of baby swings. The park has no bathroom which can be difficult if you are visiting from another neighborhood. Piccolo Park is not lacking in shade with plenty of trees. There are two metal slides. As far as accessibility I was initially impressed upon seeing a ramp into the playground area, however, the ground of the playground is filled with bark chips which are not easy to traverse for someone in a wheelchair. To get into the park you have to use a staircase leading one to wonder how a person in a wheelchair would get into the park in the first place. The location of the park is great, it would make a wonderful stop for any family as you could hit the playground and then stop for a bite to eat nearby. There are no benches or tables in Piccolo Park. There are trash cans which are essential for any park. There are no bike racks. For safety, Piccolo Park earned a half point because let's be honest while metal slides are the most fun they are also more dangerous than plastic as they heat up more during sunny days, and on rainy ones, you can catch some serious speed. The play structure itself is made of wood and while it looks well maintained there is always the possibility of a splinter on wooden play structures. The park has a beautiful green space.
